Medals of this type were awarded for Latin verse and compositions until sponsorship was ceased by the 1st Earl of Ailesbury following the "Winchester Rebellion" in 1793 and the resignation of Joseph Warton as Headmaster.
Richard Yeo (1720 - 1779) was a medalist and Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint. He was also a founding member of the Royal Academy of Art. He designed two prize medals for Winchester College.
