John Gilbert was a self trained painter best known for the illustrations and woodcuts he produced for the Illustrated London News. He also produced illustrations for Punch, The London Journal and numerous books including editions of nearly all the important English poets' works. He became president of the Old Watercolour Society in 1871, was knighted in 1872, and was elected to the Royal Academy in 1876.
